phone scam StkGx

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office today warned the public about a scam that involves a person, male or female, calling you from a number that appears to be a local number.

The caller is telling people that their social security number has been used in another state for money laundering, drug purchases and for the purchase of drug houses.

The caller will sound very convincing and will attempt to keep you on the phone in order to obtain more personal information.

At some point they will probably ask you to purchase gift cards and call them back at a number that is different from the number that may show up on your caller ID. This number will more than likely be a long distance number.

If you receive a call like this, do not give out any personal information, hang up the phone and don’t purchase any gift cards.

If you have been a victim, please contact your financial institution’s fraud department and your local law enforcement agency.
