Bike crash

First responders are working the scene of a double fatality in Chatham.

Virginia State Police have identified the victims from Monday's fatal motorcycle crash as Donald Lee Butcher, 59, and Carollee Ann Butcher, 57, of Garner, NC.  Both riders were wearing their helmets and died at the scene.


6 p.m. UPDATE: Virginia State Police Trooper C. Simpkins says a single motorcycle ran off the roadway and struck a guardrail.

”There were two occupants on the motorcycle, both of which were thrown off and resulted in two fatalities,” Simpkins said

The motorcycle was headed northbound on U.S. 29. 

Simpkins says he has not been able to contact family, and is not prepared to release the names at this time.


ORIGINAL STORY: Emergency officials are investigating what appears to be a single vehicle accident involving a motorcycle just north of the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham. 

Two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names have not been released.

First responders arrived on scene Monday, Sept. 9 around 3:30 p.m. 

The Virginia State Police have arrived on scene but have not released any information. 

U.S. 29 is reduced to one lane on the northbound side while first responders work the scene.
