The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a winter storm watch effective Saturday morning through Sunday evening ahead of winter weather that is passing through the Mississippi Valley and expected to impact Virginia.

Danville and Pittsylvania County is still expected to get some accumulation from the storm.

Forecasts Thursday indicated the southern part of Pittsylvania County, including Danville could receive up to 3 inches of snow and the northern part of the county up to Smith Mountain Lake between 2-5 inches of snow.

According to NWS meteorologist Ben Gruver, pure freezing rain up to a tenth of an inch is expected toward the southern part of Pittsylvania County and Danville.

"It's going to be a mixed bag. There will be a lot of sleet and mixing associated with this storm," Gruver said.

An update to the winter weather forecast is expected Friday afternoon, Jan. 11.
