A newborn baby was saved by a Danville police officer eating lunch at Nikki’s Restaurant on Riverside Drive Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Danville Police Lieutenant Richard Chivvis said Officer Melissa Carey was eating lunch when a server told her a baby was not breathing.

Carey immediately went to the table and found the baby, who is two weeks old, to be choking.

Chivvis said Carey performed the Heimlich maneuver and cleared the airway.

“The baby turned purple, and she was able to bring it back. She took care of the child and waited for EMS crews to arrive,” Chivvis said.

The newborn is doing well according to Chivvis.

"The mother stated that, 'If it was not for Off. Carey, my baby would not be here,'" the Danville Police Department said in a tweet Tuesday.
