The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office warned citizens Monday afternoon that it had received information about a phone scam in Southside Virginia.

According to a news release, the caller is pretending to be an employee of the sheriff's office. However, the county sheriff's office does not contact residents about items such as fines and court costs.

The office urges citizens not to provide any banking information to callers that they do not know.

Citizens may report any suspicious calls to the Pittsylvania County Sheriffs Office at 434-432-7931 or their local law enforcement agency.
