An inmate in the Danville City Jail died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019.

According to Sheriff Mike Mondul, an inmate alerted a Danville Sheriff's Office deputy around 6:30 a.m. that another inmate, Raymond Lea Massey, 53, of Danville, may have needed medical attention.

Massey was alone in his cell at the time.

The jail nurse assessed Massey and gave him his morning medication.

At 7:15 a.m., the nurse checked on Massey and determined he needed medical attention.

While Massey was being loaded into an ambulance, he stopped breathing.

A deputy sheriff and emergency medical personnel began CPR while he was being transported to the hospital, but their efforts were not successful.

Massey was pronounced dead at 7:54 a.m. His body was transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

The Danville Police Department was notified of the incident.

Massey was incarcerated on Feb. 27, 2018 and was convicted of carnal knowledge of a minor between the ages of 13 and 15 years old on June 26, 2018. He was sentenced to two years and six months.

"Massey had notable health issues when he came to jail and was being treated by our medical staff," Sheriff Mondul said.
