Melvin Lee Emerson. Sr., 81, of Chatham, Va. departed this life on Thursday, September 12, 2019 after a decline in health for the past six months.
Melvin was born in Chatham, Va. on July 29, 1938 a son of the late Calvin White Emerson and Patty Shelton Emerson.
Melvin retired from VDOT after 35 years of service. He was a member of Chatham Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and in the Truitt Bible Class. He was a former member of the Board of Directors for Cedars Country Club and Woodlawn Academy. He assisted in the organization of Little League Football in Chatham. He served on the Pittsylvania County School Board and was past president of the Lions club. He was an avid golfer and fast pitch softball player.
On July 9, 1960, he married, Virginia Boyd Emerson, who died on June 15, 2011.
Survivors include two sons, Melvin Lee Emerson. Jr., and wife, Sherl, Scott Emerson, and wife, Allison; four grandchildren, Zachary, Melissa, Mary Kathryn, and Hannah Grace; a girlfriend, Pat Cooper; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Chatham Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Charles Warnock, III. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 5-7 p.m. at Chatham Baptist Church.
