Marlene Newby Wilkes, 62, of 1629 Cooksburg Road, Chatham died Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital.

She was born October 21, 1957 in Lynchburg, a daughter of Ivoy Dudley Newby of Hurt and the late Sandy H. Newby. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church and a retired employee of Capps Shoe Company.

She is survived by two sons, Barry Short and his wife, Casie of Mich. and Anthony Wilkes and his wife, Elizabeth of Chatham; one daughter, Sandi Smith and her husband, George of Hurt; her boyfriend of seven years, William J. Doss of Chatham; two brothers, Randy Newby and his wife, Sherry of Gretna and Dennis Newby and his wife, Susan of Hurt; one sister, Darlene Newby of Hurt; six grandchildren, Zach Ruff, Lucas Smith, Kaydence Wilkes, Brayden Wilkes, Konnor Short and Nina Smith; and five step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Newby.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Green Lawn Cemetery, Hurt by the Rev. Brady Willis.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Saturday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence of her daughter, 3937 Shula Drive, Hurt.
