Charlie Bailey

Charles “Charlie” Curtis Bailey, 97, of Chatham died Saturday, December 29, 2018 at his residence.    

Born June 8, 1921 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late William Kelly Bailey and Mable Wilson Bailey. He was predeceased by a son, Charles “Chuck” Curtis Bailey, Jr; two brothers, William “Pete” Bailey and “Shag” Bailey; and three sisters, Jenny, Della Bailey and Jane Morris. Mr. Bailey was a member of Chatham Episcopal Church.  He was an Army Veteran of 21 years having served in World War II.  Following his retirement from the military he worked in Quality Control for 3M.  He loved music, reading, working crossword puzzles, and taking pictures.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Smith Yeatts Bailey of the residence; two daughters, Mona Bailey Gaytan of Brick, N.J., and Theresa Elliott; one step-son, Glenn Yeatts and wife, Kathy of Gretna; one step-daughter, Joan Davis and husband, Greg of Climax, N.C.; one sister, Martha Pope of Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Colbert-Moran Chapel by Larry Owen, Minister.

The family reconvened at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at Fort Hill Memorial Park for the burial with military honors by American Legion Altavista Post 36 and Gretna Post 232.
