Mrs. Josephine Robinson Rutledge, 72, of 45 Pine Street, Chatham, Virginia departed this life on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Stratford Health and Rehab Center.
Born February 25, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Paul Robinson, Sr. and Beulah Mae Carter Robinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Robinson and two brothers, Ernest and Willie Paul Robinson, Jr.
Mrs. Rutledge attended Northside High School and furthered her education at Essex County Community College, Newark, New Jersey where she received an associate degree in Business. She later attended Danville Community College and received her associate degree in Child Care Development. Upon graduating from high school, Mrs. Rutledge relocated to Irvington, New Jersey seeking employment.
She was last employed as a child care provider at the YWCA in Danville, Virginia and was a member of the Rosebud Missionary Baptist Church, serving as member of the Trustee Board and the NAACP.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband, Merle T. Rutledge, Sr., Thomaston, AL; one daughter, Rev. Dr. Brandy Nicole Rutledge of Derwood, MD; her son, Merle Travis Rutledge, Jr. (Resa) of Chatham, VA; five sisters, Emma Jean Robinson of Virginia Beach, VA, Rev. Dr. Edith Marie Davis (Anthony) of Wilmington, NC; Minister Nancy Daniels of Chesapeake, VA, Betty Ann Miller of Dry Fork, VA, and Patrice Robinson Harris (Bobby) of Severn, MD; two brothers, Samuel Robinson (Maybell) of Chatham, VA and Royger L. Robertson (Vicki) of Danville, VA; two grandchildren, Mekhi Lee Rutledge and Layla Nicole Rutledge and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of life for Mrs. Rutledge will be conducted on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Pastor Joan Tarpley-Robinson, officiating. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at Miller Funeral Home from 4 p.m. -7 p.m. with the family being present from 6 p.m. -7 p.m.
The family is at the residence of her brother and sister-in-law, Royger and Vicki Robertson, 266 River Oak Drive, Danville, Virginia.
