To the Editor:

Once again the community of Gretna came together and under the direction of Jimmy and Connie Chaney made a brunswick stew on Saturday behind First Baptist Church of Gretna with all proceeds going to the Gretna Elementary School Week-end Meal Program. The Chaneys have prepared stew for us for a number of years and local churches: Anderson Memorial UM Church, Elba Baptist, First Baptist of Gretna, Liberty Christian, Piney Grove Missionary Baptist, Round Pond Baptist, and Zion United Methodist have all contributed along with local citizens.

Elba Butcher Shoppe of Gretna and Food Lion of Gretna donated over 200 pounds of potatoes and onions. The fellowship of our community peeling and chopping and then stirring in the very cold weather helps our community realize how caring we are for the students who need some assistance at home on week-ends and holidays to add to their meals. Any participant in the Week-end program that came by with a coupon received 2 free quarts of stew for their family, thanks to a local caring citizen.

Anyone in the community or any church that would like to help pack bags at the Northern Pittsylvania County Food Bank or assist with projects can contact me or leave a message at Gretna Elementary School or First Baptist Church of Gretna.

A special thanks to all who purchased and assisted with the stew for this great need. The Chaneys will be preparing another stew on Saturday, Dec. 15 for the Gretna High cheerleading team.
