NASCAR competition concludes

As this year’s NASCAR competition comes to an end, the Star-Tribune congratulates Josh Calloway of Dry Fork and Richard Shumate Jr. of Danville for being the final two winners of the year. Both correctly picked Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson to finish as the top three racers in the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Miami Speedway in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.

Tennis comes to Carlisle School

A new after school program at Carlisle School in Danville is bringing tennis to students and some of them have never played the game before. In a partnership with the Southside Area Tennis Association, Quickstart Tennis for Kids is a kid-friendly clinic for kids of all ages, and ability levels. The program focuses on motor skill development and tennis technique through an initiative game-based format. It gives kids the bug for tennis in Danville and provides them with the equipment they need.

Cats earn All-District honors

Coaches from the Dogwood District schools met recently and came up with All-District awards for football. Dan River had 15 players receive All-District accolades, with six players making the Dogwood District First Team.

Hargrave hoops help kids build character

John L. Hurt, Jr. Elementary School third, fourth, and fifth graders were treated to a program put on by Hargrave Military Academy’s postgraduate basketball team. Hargrave Coach Lee Martin and the team shot baskets, practiced and shared a bit about themselves and gave tips for students being good citizens.

Eagles halted in 2nd round

The story on Friday night for the Eagles was pretty much the opposite of the first round victory over Amherst. The Salem Spartans came to Danville fired up and ready to roll, defeating the Eagles 42-13 to bring George Washington’s playoff run to an end.

5 Cavaliers make All-District teams

Five Chatham High School football players made the all-district teams, and four others received honorable mention. Parker Martin made first team all-district as an all-purpose defensive player. Martin played a hybrid position that capitalized on his ability to operate in space. Martin made the all-district first team at running back. Blazing speed made Martin a valuable part of Chatham’s running attack. Parker Martin also received honorable mention as a kick returner.

Golfers continue tour at Danville Golf Club

After the thick morning fog cleared twenty-seven members of the Laidback Golf Tour went out to experience the beauty and challenge of the 1916 Donald Ross designed Danville Golf Club. It was the third time the Tour has held an annual tournament here but the first time on the brand new mini-verde greens. Just as last year’s group; there were two rounds in the seventies and nineteen birdies carded. Even after the inch of rain the night before play we found the course to be in fantastic condition and a joy to play.

Cats end season at Glenvar

Dan River entered Friday’s contest as the last team in the 2C Region playoffs and had the task of facing top-seeded Glenvar on a bitterly cold night at Highlanders Stadium. The Wildcats kept the game close for a half before the Highlanders broke the game open in the second half in route to a 38-0 victory over Dan River. With the win, Glenvar moves on and will host Floyd County in the Region 2C semifinals. The Wildcats finished the season with a 5-6 record, dropping their final four games.

Lady Cats fall in regional

James River ended Dan River’s season on Tuesday Oct. 30 as the Lady Wildcats volleyball team fell 3-0 in the Region C quarterfinals at James River High School in Buchanan. Dan River lost to the Knights by the scores of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-3. James River defeated Giles in five sets to earn at state berth, but lost to Radford in the region championship.

Cavaliers fall to Generals

Chatham High School’s varsity football team lost the last game of their season to William Campbell 51-21. The Generals have a potent offensive attack; their defense is not as proficient. William Campbell’s offense scored early, and scored often. Chatham was able to counter with a couple touchdowns by land, and another by air.

Averett volleyball falls in heartbreaking final

The Cougars had a 2-0 lead in sets on Saturday in a heartbreaking 3-2 (25-13, 25-17, 22-25, 26-28, 10-15) loss in the USA South Conference Volleyball Championship. The Cougars finished their season with a record of 32-4.

26 compete at Chatmoss Country Club

The Laidback tour continued as 26 golfers came out to enjoy the beauty and challenge of the newly renovated Chatmoss Country Club. It was the sixteenth tournament of the season for the Laid-back Golf Tour as their season nears an end. The brand new mini-Verde ultra-dwarf Bermuda greens were very smooth and challenging. The course gave up thirteen birdies and one eagle to the field and only three rounds in the seventies.

Edmunds receives nomination

Dan River head coach Ferrell Edmunds was recently notified that he made the list of nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Edmunds was named one of 108 modern-era nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2018 and he is one of only four tight ends nominated, joining the likes of NY Giants’ Mark Bavaro, New England’s Ben Coates, and Dallas’ Jay Novacek.

Bulldogs outgun Cats

The Dan River football team lost their second game in a row as the Wildcats fell at Martinsville 56-28 on Friday evening. The Wildcats (5-4) entered Friday’s game without a few starters, but it would be turnovers (five turnovers resulting in 28 points for Martinsville) and missed tackles that plagued them throughout the game.

The Trojans volleyball team breezed through the Piedmont District last week, starting with a dominating 3-0 (25-5, 25-8, 25-9) victory over Martinsville in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Cavaliers fall to Altavista

Seniors paraded across the football field for Chatham’s last home game of the season.  Altavista spoiled senior night by beating Chatham 33-18.  Ethan Reynolds surpassed a milestone against Cumberland, and he set a record against Altavista.  Reynolds passed 1,000 yards passing against Cumberland, and set a new single season passing record with 1174 yards this season.  Reynolds was five for 12 for 72 yards passing against Altavista, and he has another game to pad his single season school record.

Late errors haunt Trojans

Tied at 25 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Tunstall Trojans had an opportunity to break the tie and possibly win over Magna Vista, a school that they haven’t beaten since 2008, but costly mistakes and penalties plagued Tunstall as they gave up 21 unanswered points.

Cavs win over Dukes

The homecoming king was sure to be a football player. Jeremy Sloane, Jacob Willis, Harper Jones, and Ben Burton were the four young men nominated for the homecoming court. Jones, Willis, and Burton are offensive linemen, and Sloane (who is no slacker) is a wide receiver. Ben Burton won the contest and accompanied homecoming queen Kate Clatterbuck across the field at halftime.

Eagles top Franklin County in shootout

While the Eagles appeared to have control of the game with a final score of 63-35 over Franklin County on Friday night, Franklin County after the first 24 minutes of play gave GW a run for their money.

Cats fall to Campbell

Dan River hosted William Campbell for senior night on Friday, but it would be the Generals that played spoiler. Seven turnovers (four interceptions, three fumbles) costly penalties, three touchdowns called back, and failed scoring chances would sum up Dan River’s 34-13 lost to William Campbell. Every time the Wildcats (5-3) seemed to gain some momentum, the Generals responded or the Wildcats shot themselves in the foot.

Cats run past Cavs

Senior Tyree Barton rushed for a career-high 244 yards and four rushing touchdowns as Dan River picked up a 42-20 victory on homecoming against county rival Chatham. Even though the Wildcats were playing on Friday the 13th, it would be Barton that brought bad luck to the Cavaliers on offense and defense.

Softball facility opens in Hurt

ThunderStruck, a travel softball organization, has opened an indoor softball practice and training facility in Hurt. It is one of only three such facilities in the area, reported ThunderStruck president Keith Jackson.

The Tunstall Trojan varsity squad had a bit of a struggle in the second set against the Bengels but still managed to emerge victorious in a 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 25-14) victory over Bassett on Tuesday, Oct. 10.

A wise coach once said “Offense sells tickets, but defense win games”. That became a reality for the George Washington Eagles as they blew out the Magna Vista Warriors 45-0 in what many had thought would be a close game.

Cavaliers struggle in loss to Appomattox

The Appomattox Raiders defeated Chatham 58-7 in a game where the Cavaliers could not stop the Raider offensive machine. Ben Burton played both ways for most of the first half. When fatigue began to take its toll, Caleb Oakes came in for Burton on defense. Oakes had a tackle for loss on his first play, and he recovered a fumble on his second play.

Eagles offense continues domination

With seconds remaining in the first half, the George Washington Eagles attempted to make a last second surge to break their tie at 14 against the Tunstall Trojans. On the Tunstall 31 yard line, Eagles quarterback Carlos Poole found a wide-open Shawn Watlington on the pass to put the Eagles up 21-14.

Wildcats overcome slow start to win

After having their bye week last Friday, Dan River traveled to Altavista and despite a lackluster start, the Wildcats came away with a 34-6 victory over the Colonels at English Stadium. The Wildcats (4-2, 1-1 Dogwood) played Friday’s game without starters Jaylan Fitzgerald and BJ Edmondson and the team came out a little bit sluggish.

Gretna’s Rigney commits to Liberty

Before even starting his junior season with Hawks’ baseball, catcher and Gretna junior Cole Rigney already knows where he wants to play in college. Rigney, having already visited Liberty University on multiple occasions, after talks with Scott Jackson, has decided to join Flames baseball at the conclusion of his senior year at Gretna in 2019.

Eagles soar past Patrick County in blowout

There is a difference between blowout games and absolutely brutal games. The beat-down that the George Washington Eagles put on Patrick County was beyond both, GW would win 70-7. GW was only one touchdown away from breaking the school record for most touchdown in a game and was 14 points shy of tying the school record for most points in a game.

Dan River’s varsity volleyball won all three of their contests this week and they are now on a six-match winning streak. The Lady Wildcats swept Martinsville on Monday, won a five-thriller at Altavista, and shutout William Campbell on Thursday.

Colonels edge Cavaliers in overtime

Chatham volleyball lost two matches last week. Chatham lost to Tunstall in three sets on Monday August 25. On Thursday the Cavaliers lost to Altavista in overtime. Altavista scored 17 to Chatham’s 15 in the fifth set of the match.

Peters to compete in world truck series

It has been nearly four months since Timothy Peters competed in a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. Last week, Young’s Motorsports announced that Peters will be behind the wheel of the No. 02. Randco Industries/Young’s Building Systems Chevrolet at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Eagles defeat Martinsville in beat down

Martinsville was completely overpowered in Friday night’s 62-15 blowout loss to George Washington at the Eagles’ home stadium. The first quarter ended with the Eagles leading 28-7 and from there, GW never looked back.

Dan River opened Dogwood District play Friday by hosting defending 2A state champion Appomattox County. The Wildcats fell behind 17-0 in the first half and despite fighting back to get within 10 points, Dan River suffered a 34-21 defeat to the Raiders.

Halifax’s 3-0 victory over George Washington on Tuesday, Sept. 12, was a tough match for the Eagles, who struggled offensively in the second set. Halifax dominated all three sets 25-11, 25-1, 25-10.

Trojans steamroll Cavs in 63-14 blowout

The Tunstall Trojans only managed to get up 20 points combined in their first two games. Entering last Friday’s match-up vs. Chatham, they almost tripled that number. Tunstall put a pounding on the Chatham Cavaliers in a blowout; beating their county rival 63-14. The last time that the Trojans put up more than 60 points in a game dates back to 2009.
