Twenty-five golfers from the Laidback Golf Tour journeyed to Martinsville on Tuesday, Sept. 10 to play at Chatmoss Country Club in their 14th tournament of the season.
Once again they found the course to be in excellent condition and the staff to be very cordial. Last years event at Chatmoss gave up ten birdies and three rounds in the seventies to a group of twenty; while this year the field was able to record twenty-three birdies and get five players in the seventies. Everyone found the mini verde ultra dwarf bermuda greens to be quite quick and challenging.
Rick Walker from Reidsville, N.C. led all scorers with his round of 74. Walker who is in the A Flight had never played at Chatmoss before but played solidly for his second win of the season. He had one penalty stroke for losing his ball in a weed hazard on side of a fairway and carded his only birdie with a two putt from about 40 ft. on the par 5 twelfth hole.
Fran Hensley who won the A Flight last year here finished second with a score of 77. Hensley had four birdies in her round. David Turner claimed the flights low net prize with his 78-6=net 72 round after a match of four holes to break a tie with Hensley. Michael Reynolds tied Hensley in 2018 event for first place in thrid win of the season in the B Flight.
Jim White finished second at 81 and claimed the flights low net prize with his net score of 71. Larry Barefoot; another Reidsville native claimed his second win of the season as well in the C Flight with his round of 86.
Randy McCann, Mike Asbury, and Steve Abbott all turned in rounds of 90 but after a match of back nine totals McCann claimed second place and the low net prize for the flight with net 74.
Willard Vicks was able to claim his third win of the season in D Flight with his round of 88. The points earned from the victory moved Vicks into the top spot in the season points race with five more tournaments to go. Meanwhile 83 year-old Red Thompson made his return to playing for the first time since the season opener in March. Thompson finished with a 97 for second place and also claimed the flights low net prize with net 67.
