8-Run 5th lifts Lady Cats
Dan River used an eight-run fifth inning to put away Buckingham County 10-2 on Monday in Region 2C softball action.
Katie Moser led the Wildcats with three RBIs on a double and a two-run homer in the fifth. Gracie Waller (double), Jordan Vogltanz (RBI single), and Kendall Meadows (2-3, RBI) all came up with clutch at-bats for the Wildcats. Emily McVay struck out six and held the Knights to two runs to get the win.
Region 2C Baseball
The Dan River opened the Region 2C baseball playoffs with a 7-4 victory over Buckingham County on Thursday evening in Ringgold.Dan River outhit the Knights 10-5 and overcame five errors to move onto the quarterfinals.
Buckingham scored a run in the first inning before the Wildcats exploded for fivd runs in the third inning. DR took a 7-1 lead into the seventh before the Knights scored three runs in their final at-bats. Dawson Oakes was winning pitcher as he struck out 10 batters while giving up just one run and three hits in six innings. Jackson Lancaster had the hot bat for the Wildcats as he went 3-for-4 on the night with a double, two runs, and two RBIs. Clark Sowers had two doubles and a RBI, Brandon Jones had a pair of base hits, and Alex Alderson added in an RBI single against the Knights.
Cats season ends at Appomattox
Dan River’s baseball team saw their season come to an end as the Wildcats fell to the Appomattox Raiders 7-6 on Monday. Both teams would score a run in the second and third innings before Appomattox exploded for five runs in the fourth while four Wildcat errors would come back to haunt Dan River.
The Wildcats didn’t go away without a fight as sophomore Reece Harris had a bases-clearing triple in the fifth to cut it to 7-5. Dan River added another run in the sixth inning and trailed 7-6 with their last at-bats. DR would get the tying runner on base and over to second with two outs. However, the Raiders would end that rally to win and advanced to the semifinals on Wednesday.
Nolan Nuckles (double), Jackson Lancaster, and Tyler Gammon had two hits, while Brandon Jones and Clark Sowers each had an RBI in their final game as a Wildcat. Jones and fellow senior Dawson Oakes pitched for the Wildcats.
Strong finish lifts soccer team
In boys’ soccer action, Dan River scored three goals in the final 13 minutes of the second half as the Wildcats took down Buckingham County 5-2. Ethan Lewis scored two goals, with his second one coming off a great assist by Luke White that put DR for good at 3-2. White would steal the ball and score an unassisted goal with six minutes left, while Dylan Groom could capitalize on a goalkeeper error as he dribbled a shot just into the goal. Lewis and Groom scores two goals, White had one goal, and Andrew Newman had eight saves in goal.
Girls’ soccer falls to Nelson
Nelson County ended Dan River’s season Monday in a 4-1 loss. Kathryn Saunders had a goal. The Lady Wildcats’ ended the year with a school record of 6-8-3 under firat year coach Tim Saunders.
