The Laidback Golf Tour returned to Lynrock Golf Club recently as a replacement for a scheduled tournament at Plantation Golf Club, which was experiencing the loss of eight greens. Eight members of the Tour had played at Lynrock this past February in their season opening ice-breaker Skins event. The field had twenty participants with six of them turning in rounds in the seventies and carding 21 birdies for the field. The course was in great shape even after having to recover from flooding damage from fall, winter and spring of 2018 and 2019.
Steve Williams was surprised that his no birdie performance of 75 held up as the low round of the day. Williams stated that the course was playing short but that his opening two three putts on his starting two holes set the stage for several missed birdie opportunities later in the round as he felt he could not buy a putt. His performance however gave him his second win of the season and two in a row after leading the field in his last outing also. Finishing second in the A Flight only a stroke behind was Jeff Shumate at 76. Shumate was promoted to A Flight two tournaments ago and has claimed the flights low net prize both weeks and five times this season. Shumate was playing with a 11 handicap and shot 76 for a net 65.
In the B Flight, Jim White claimed his second win of the season with his round of 77. White carded three birdies today to help secure his lead over second place finisher Robbie Revis who shot an 80. Revis won the flights low net prize with his net 67.
Meanwhile the C Flight saw a first-time winner emerge as Alan Sampson, a returning member from prior Tour seasons made good of his first 2019 season appearance. Sampson entered the event with an average gross from previous seasons of 88 but fired a 78 today. Sampson powered his drives all day on the short layout and only had chip shots into most greens. He felt he could have been much lower if his short game and putting could have meshed with his driving. Bob Foyle finished second in the flight with a 79 and net 63. Foyle had missed his last event due to a back injury. Both players had a single birdie in their rounds
Kenny Powell lost two balls on his opening hole and started with a triple bogey but was able to bounce back for his fourth win of the season in the D Flight. Powell had a missed shot roll within two foot for a birdie on No. 18 and turned his bad start around allowing him to finish with a 92 for the win. Willard Vicks finished with a 97 for the flights second place. Meanwhile Dan Curtin cancelled out Powell’s birdie on No. 18 in skins game and claimed the flights low net prize with his round of 103 -25 net 75.
The Tours next scheduled tournament is Tuesday, July 23 at Country Hills Golf Club in Gibsonville, NC. It will begin at 10 a.m. and entry fee for Tour members will be $55 or guest may play for $30 but are not eligible to win any prizes.
