The unpredictability of collegiate sports this year could play to the advantage of Hargrave Military Academy's hoops program, as high-caliber players elect a senior or post-graduate season with the Tigers in lieu of commitment to collegiate programs that could be put on hold for at least a season.
Chicago three-star threat Tyler Beard cited the uncertainty of COVID-19 as the reason he's deferring one year from Georgetown in favor of playing a season in Chatham.
Beard announced his decision via Instagram last month, saying Hargrave was "in his best interest."
The 6-2 point guard previously committed to Georgetown in January, set to start in the fall of 2020.
Beard joins local high school record-setters Grayson Honaker and Will Felton to keep up the momentum from Hargrave's 2019-20 season, when they secured a 37-4 record.
Last season, Hargrave went 18-0 at home and remained undefeated in non-neutral away matchups. The Tigers recorded five wins scoring 120 points or more.
