The girls’ cross country team finished eighth out of 14 schools at the Region 2C championship, held Wednesday at Green Hill Park in Salem. Sophomore Emily Saunders (was 25th overall and just three spots away from qualifying for state. Sisters Lauren and Alyssa McFalls were 41st and 42nd respectively, with senior Lauren edging out sophomore Alyssa in her final race. Junior Haley Wade was 47th and freshman Rebekah Dalton was 52nd, while senior Kaley Purdy was freshman Grace Doss finished the race to round out the team.
Dan River only had four boys make the trip and did not have a team score. Junior Michael Groom was 29th with a time of 19:25. Juniors Elijah Moshenek (45th), Dylan Alvarado (57th), and Jonathan Adkins (65th) each completed the course for the Wildcats out of over 70 runners.
In the team competition, Radford’s girls and Allegheny’s boys were the team champions. Radford and Glenvar had both boys’ and girls’ teams qualify for state, with Floyd County’s girls also earning state berths. Glenvar’s Daniel Zearfoss and Carly Wilkes repeated at individual region champions.
