DANVILLE, Va. — A 23-year-old Danville man yesterday was sentenced to 50 years with 25 years suspended for killing his 3-month-old son.

Antoine Juwan Jefferson was sentenced to 40 years with 20 years suspended for second-degree murder and 10 years with five years suspended for abuse of a child or serious injury.

At Jefferson's arraignment last year, police testified that the victim's fatal injuries were consistent with having been vigorously shaken.

On Aug. 24, 2020, the Star-Tribune reported Danville Police had charged Jefferson, then 22, with felony homicide and felony child abuse in the death of his son.

Police arrested Jefferson Aug. 21, 2020, in Danville without incident.

This investigation began Aug. 9, 2020, when the parents drove the infant to the hospital for treatment because the child was unresponsive. Medical staff at Sovah Health's Danville campus notified the police.

The hospital transferred the infant to Duke University Medical Center, where he died Aug. 12, 2020.

Police collaborated with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.
