Matthew Thomas Bernard, 18, of Keeling was charged with three counts of first degree murder for allegedly killing Emily Bernard Bivens, Joan Bernard, and an infant. 

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office has officially announced that Matthew Thomas Bernard, 18, of Keeling, has been arrested on three counts of first-degree murder. 

The Pittsylvania County 911 center received a call around 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, Aug. 27 reporting that a person had been shot. 

Deputies arrived to find a deceased female in the driveway of the residence. 

Upon entering the residence Deputies discovered the body of a second female and the body of a deceased child.

Information gathered at the scene led law enforcement on searches in proximity of the residence.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., Bernard ran from a wooded area and law enforcement were able to get Bernard into custody.   

The names of the deceased are being held until family members are notified.

Investigators are still on-scene collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. 

A first court appearance has not been scheduled.

The three victims in this case will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke to determine the cause and manner of death.
