Dr. Angela Hairston was appointed as the next superintendent of Danville Public Schools at this evening’s school board meeting.

Hairston has more than 30 years of experience working in public education in Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina. 

She has served as superintendent for Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools in North Carolina since 2019 and previously served as superintendent in Augusta, Georgia. Hairston’s early career was spent in Danville Public Schools as a math teacher, assistant principal and principal.

Hairston was appointed by the school board in a 6-1 vote, with board member Dr. Philip Campbell voting no.

Hairston’s position will be effective on Dec. 1.

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the school division in the search. 

Dr. Catherine Magouyrk has been serving as interim superintendent since July. 

Former Superintendent Dr. Stanley Jones resigned at the end of June.
