During the month of September, students in fourth and fifth grade at Brosville Elementary School in Pittsylvania County were invited to participate in an essay contest to honor people involved in the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The essay contest was developed to explore concepts of respect, citizenship and empathy.

Sandi Rossman, Teacher at Tunstall High School, worked with FreAnda Glass, Brosville Elementary School’s counselor, to organize the contest.

Students watched a video about how 9/11 victims are honored on their birthday and were tasked with writing an essay on other ways to honor the victims of 9/11.

Contest winners were Aubrey Collins, first place, and Nicholas White, second place.

These students were invited to a special online Google meet where they were recognized.
