A local drug store is doing their part in helping the community get vaccinated for COVID-19.
Gretna Drug, located on Vaden Drive, has been offering vaccinations since Jan. 11 and has since vaccinated more than 1,000 people.
“We’re all on board with trying to get the vaccines out to people as soon as possible,” Chapman “Chappie” Brown, Gretna Drug owner and pharmacist in charge, said.
The pharmacy receives an undetermined amount of vaccine doses from the Virginia Department of Health weekly. They have just recently started giving people second doses.
“This is a two-shot sequence...so that kind of doubles your workload,” Brown said. “We’re hoping we can get enough vaccines in so we can accommodate those due for their second dose.”
While vaccine clinics are taking place in different areas in the county, Gretna Drug is currently the only place in Gretna offering the vaccine to the public. They are maintaining a waiting list that is quite long, but they do all of their own scheduling in house.
They are currently working under the guidelines of vaccine distribution, focusing on first responders, essential workers, those 65 and older and those with compromised health.
“I’m hoping that the supply will continue to grow so that we can get to people on our waiting list faster,” Brown said.
Brown said he has a “personal engagement” when it comes to vaccine distribution, as he feels strongly that it is needed to reduce growth of COVID-19 cases.
“My staff members here at Gretna Drug, I feel like they share my vision,” Brown said. “They have stepped up to the plate too, and we just want to do everything we can to get our community back to the way it used to be.”
Brown encourages community members to get on the list if they are interested in getting a vaccination and to be patient.
“We will get with them as soon as possible,” Brown said. “I would also encourage them not to panic about this, and try to be patient as they can. We will get back to them as soon as we possibly can.”
To be put on the waiting list at Gretna Drug, call (434) 656-1251. They will take a name and number and call back when a vaccine is available.
