UPDATE:  A parcel search of Pittsylvania County public records show that 1949 Keeling Drive is owned by Nelson W Bernard, III and Joan J. Bernard. 

UPDATE: Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor confirmed this morning at 8:07 a.m. 911 received a call from a neighbor who visited and found a dead body in a driveway. A search of the residence uncovered two additional bodies inside, one females and a small child.

Pittsylvania County dispatch placed a reverse 911 call to Keeling residents that stated “Citizens in the Keeling area are asked to be on the look out for Matthew Bernard.  White male, 19 years old, last seen wearing a white tee shirt and blue jeans.  He is armed with a rifle and considered very dangerous.  He was last seen in the area of 1949 Keeling Drive in the Keeling community.  If you see this individual do not contact him but call the Pittsylvania County 911 center immediately.  Citizens in this area should exercise caution and be on the lookout for this individual until further notice.”

The person of interest is considered armed and dangerous. First information from the sheriff's department is that Bernard has fled to the woods. The sheriff's department does not know what type of weapon was used, but they do confirm that a firearm was used.

The sheriff's department has K-9 units on the way and is currently waiting for the weather to clear to get aerial units deployed. 

UPDATE: Pittsylvania County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Jones sent out an alert at 9:58 a.m. regarding the "Keeling community incident"

This message is from Dr. Mark Jones, Division Superintendent. Today an incident took place in the Keeling community and as a precaution Dan River High School, Dan River Middle School, Kentuck Elementary School, Southside Elementary School, Chatham Middle School, Chatham High School, Regional Alternative School and the Pittsylvania Career and Technical Center were placed on Code Orange.  During Code Orange, exterior doors and teachers’ classroom doors remain locked, students are not permitted to go outside and administration monitors hallways and entrances.  During this incident, the safety of students and staff was our most important priority and at no time were any students or staff in danger.  If you should have a question, please contact your school principal.    Thank you.  

UPDATE: The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's office sent out a reverse 911 to Keeling residents this morning within a seven mile radius of 1949 Keeling Drive, stating; “Citizens in the Keeling area are asked to be on the look out for Matthew Bernard.  White male, 19 years old, last seen wearing a white tee shirt and blue jeans.  He is armed with a rifle and considered very dangerous.  He was last seen in the area of 1949 Keeling Drive in the Keeling community.  If you see this individual do not contact him but call the Pittsylvania County 911 center immediately.  Citizens in this area should exercise caution and be on the lookout for this individual until further notice.”

 

 

A heavy police presence has a portion of Keeling Drive shut down Tuesday morning, Aug. 27. 

It is unclear as of 9 a.m. the reason for the heavy police presence. Visible at the scene is crime tape surrounding a residence in the 1900 block of Keeling Drive. 

Deputies and other law enforcement officials are out canvassing the area with weapons drawn. 

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office, Virginia State Police, and Pittsylvania Public Safety are all on scene. 

As a precautionary measure, Career Tech, Kentuck Elementary, Dan River Middle, Dan River High, Chatham Middle, Chatham High, and Southside Elementary Schools have been put on lockdown.
