Dan River’s golf team placed ninth overall at the 2020 Region 2C golf championship on Monday, April 12 at the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech. The Wildcats shot a combined score of 396. Junior Hayden Scolpini carded a team-low of 92, while senior Dalen Robertson scored 98. Sophomore Cooper Terry (101) and senior Collin Oakes (105) made up the Wildcats’ scoring foursome while sophomore Thomas Bowling (110) and senior Dakota Holt (118) finished the 18-hole course.
Floyd County won the Region 2C championship as they defeated Giles by three strokes 331 to 334, with the Buffaloes earning the lone team state berth. Chatham’s Matt Arnold and Radford's Trevor Price each shot 76 and were the co-medalists of the region, while Tyler Lee of Alleghany carded 78 and earned the last individual qualifying spot. Arnold, Price, and Lee – along with the entire Floyd County team – will return to this same course on Monday, April 19 to play in the Class 2 State golf championships.
Dan River’s volleyball team saw its season conclude on Tuesday as the Wildcats were defeated by Nelson County 3-0 in the first round of the Region 2C volleyball tournament. The Governors raced out in the first set and easily won 25-8 over the Wildcats. the second set was more competitive one, however DR came out on the losing end 25-20. The third set was tightly contested throughout and the Wildcats actually served for the set at 24-23. However, Nelson County scored the next three points and won 26-24 to take the match. Nelson would go to beat Patrick County 3-0 Wednesday before falling to Floyd County 3-1 in the semifinals.
The Wildcats’ season ends their season with a 3-9 record. Tuesday’s game was also the final game for their eight seniors – Sky Hudgins, Kendall Parsons, Riley Nuckles, Madison Newman, Kristen Sellers, Emily Butts, Makaila Randall and Jordan Vogltanz.
