Dan River senior Alicea Farmer’s triple double performance lifted the Lady Wildcats to a 57-48 victory over Gretna on Friday night. DR was trailing 13-12 after a quarter and was down 15-12 before they went on an 11-1 run to take a 23-16 lead into the break. The Wildcats would build their lead to as much as 16 at 36-20 and hold a 39-29 advantage entering the final quarter. Gretna would not go away and get to within 7 at 47-40, but an intentional foul committed on Farmer allowed her to knock down a pair of free throws to make it a nine-point advantage. Both teams would trade scores over the final few minutes as the Wildcats would leave Gretna with the season sweep of the Hawks.
Farmer surpassed the 900-point mark on Friday night as she posted a triple double. Farmer finished with 35 points, 20 rebounds, 10 steals, and 7 assists. Sophomore Cara Barrett had a double-double with 13 points (5-of-6 FTs) and 13 rebounds. Akeelah Scott had seven points while Q'Lexis Stork had two points.
Friday’s victory snapped a five-game losing streak by the Wildcats after they lost on Tuesday evening to Appomattox County. The Wildcats would fall in a close contest to the Raiders by a score of 58-49. Dan River trailed by only three at 34-31 entering the fourth quarter, but the Raiders would Farmer had 34 points and 17 rebounds, however, the next highest scorers on the team were Akeelah Scott, Cara Barrett, and Alivia Ailport with 4 points apiece.
Dan River will host William Campbell on Tuesday and play at Altavista on Friday, Feb. 10.
Boys basketball
The Wildcats split their two district contest this week to move to 5-4 in the Dogwood and 6-11 on the season. Dan River traveled to Appomattox County Tuesday night and left with a hard-fought 26-24 victory over the Raiders. Jesiah Lampkin led the Wildcats with 14 points. Cortez Inge chipped in five points, Jacoby Davis had four, and Trevon Brooks had three in the win.
Dan River dropped a home game against Gretna on Friday 56-48. The Wildcats led by as many as five in the first half before entering halftime tied with the Hawks at 22. Dan River held a four-point lead late in the third quarter, but Gretna would draw a foul and get an questionable goaltending call in route to a three-point play. The Hawks would end the quarter on a banked three pointer as DR fell behind 41-39.
The Wildcats will travel to William Campbell on Tuesday before hosting Altavista on Friday, Feb. 10 for Senior Night.
