VHSL fall schedules for athletics and activities delayed

Due to Thursday’s impending severe winter weather forecast for areas throughout the Commonwealth, multiple Virginia High School League sporting events have been postponed.

The Class 2 swimming events, originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 11, have been postponed until Thursday, Feb. 18.

“The decision to postpone the event was made with the safety of our competitors, coaches, officials and meet management team in mind,” said VHSL Executive Director, Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun.

League staff will continue monitoring weather forecasts for potential impact on other events scheduled for this week.

Due to the weather forecast calling for heavy snowfall in various areas throughout the commonwealth, the VHSL gymnastics finals scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 at Floyd E. Kellam High School in Virginia Beach have also been postponed and re-scheduled for next Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 at Kellam.

Additionally, the Class 4, 5 and 6 swimming events, originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center and Oak Marr RECenter in Oakton have been postponed. The re-scheduling of dates and sites will be forthcoming.

At this time, the Class 3 swimming events are still scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 14, but League staff will continue monitoring weather forecasts.

The timeframe to complete regional basketball and wrestling tournaments will also be extended. Regions needing to complete ongoing tournaments are encouraged to use Sunday, Feb. 14 to complete their event with school division approval.

The VHSL state basketball tournaments scheduled for Tuesday, February 16 through Saturday, Feb. 20, and VHSL state-wrestling tournaments scheduled Thursday, Feb. 18 through Saturday, Feb. 20 will remain as scheduled.
