Tunstall Baseball honored five players for senior night: (l-r) Dylan Burnette, Hunter Yeatts, Dylan Young, Cade Devivi and Colin Moore.

Tunstall baseball had a 2-0 week as they inch closer to a potential first place finish in the Piedmont District regular season that will wrap up on Wednesday, June 9.

Tunstall’s 9-1 record puts them in a top spot over Halifax who has split with Tunstall and has one additional loss against Patrick County. Due to the rating system that the VHSL uses for district play, the Patrick County loss particularly hurts the Comets which could be an advantage for Tunstall.

This past week, Tunstall hosted Bassett for Senior Night and came away with a 4-0 win. Coach Barry Shelton is proud of his seniors' performance on and off the field. Seniors Colin Moore, Cade Devivi, Hunter Yeatts, Dylan Burnette, and Dylan Young all graduated with honors on Saturday. “They all are fine young men and it has been a pleasure for our coaching staff to coach them. They have been great senior leaders and at the moment we have a chance to win our district. We thank them for all of their hard work and sacrifice for our program,” Shelton said.

Raymond Ladd was the winning pitcher against Bassett giving up no runs and recording 9 strikeouts.

Tunstall took advantage of three walks and scored all 4 runs in the second inning alone. Yeatts got things started with a double that was followed by a hard hit 2 RBI single from Landon Jones. Elijah Byrd also hit a 2 RBI single with 2 outs to score the final runs of the game.

On Thursday, June 3, the Trojans traveled to Magna Vista where they squeaked out a 9-8 win. The Trojans held the Warriors to only one run with the exception of a 7 run 6th inning.

Despite only pitching one inning, Byrd recorded the win. Moore and Yeatts both pitched three innings.

Down 6-8 going into the top of the 7th inning, Ladd and Jones hit back-to-back singles. Following a walk to Carter Richardson, Daniel Hicks singled to score Ladd and Jones. Young then hit a sacrifice fly to score Richardson as the go-ahead run.

Moore and Young both had doubles in the win. Jones was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Yeatts added 1 hit and 2 RBIs while Ladd contributed 1 hit and 1 RBI.

At press time, the Trojans will have already completed the regular season. Regional play is set for a June 14-19 window.
