Freshman Brit Bowman makes a drive to the net through Bassett defenders to score.

The Tunstall girls’ soccer team won 7-2 against Bassett June 1.

This game was historic for the Trojans as goalie Evelyn Balderamma signed to play soccer with Averett University in the coming fall and freshman Brit Bowman tied the freshman record for goals in a season at ten goals. The Tunstall girls played with determination and fluidity on the field to a sweeping victory.

The first goal of the game came from junior Sophia Miller as an assist from sophomore Hayden Wentz at the 14-minute mark. Wentz played a significant role for the entirety of the game in terms of moving the ball up the field and aiding in assists. Senior Lily Chaney scored the second goal of the game after a drive through Bassett defense. After carrying and clearing the ball up the field multiple times with a few shots on goal herself, sophomore Emma Dowdy was able to make a successful kick into the net off of a clean pass from junior Emma Howell. Bassett was able to make their first goal of the within the last minutes of the half.

After a frustrating twenty minutes into the second half, and multiple shots on goal by Bowman, Bowman was finally able to make a clear shot into the back of the net off of an assist from Wentz. This would be Wentz’s second assist of the game as she proved herself once again to be vital to the rapid transitions on the field. Just three minutes later, senior and captain Abby Childress set up for a corner kick as sophomore Kaly Fry edged her way up from defense along the lines of the field. Rather than clear it into the box, Childress made a very deceptive pass to Fry outside of the box in which Fry was able to clear it into the goal. The sixth goal of the game came from Bowman as she scored her tenth goal of the season. Bassett scored again in the last minutes of the game but was quickly followed by another goal off of a corner from Childress to senior Madison Branton.

Following this impressive victory was a fall to Magna Vista High School on June 3 thus moving the Tunstall girls record to 6-3. The next game will be June 8 at Halifax County for the final game of the regular season for the Trojans.
